Diehl gets a well deserved deal
It's a smart move by the Giants to redo David Diehl's contract. Diehl was rock-solid at left tackle last season, and is the main anchor of the Giants' offensive line. And yet, what the Giants did was rare. They actually ripped up his $15.5 million contract and gave him a new six-year contract worth $31 million. Money well spent.

Wrong guy wins the MVP
Kobe Bryant of the LA Lakers wins the MVP award, but Chris Paul had a better season. Don't get me wrong, Bryant is a great player, but his name and playing on the big stage, gets him more votes. Paul is a very special player in New Orleans, but doesn't get the publicity that Bryant does.

Gillispie stoops to an all time low
There is something very wrong with what Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie did last week. What he did was offer a scholarship to an 8th grader from Thousand Oaks, California. What is he thinking? This young man, who happens to be 6-4, doesn't even know what high school he's going to attend. He's only 15 years old. I hope both Fran McCaffery and Will Brown agree with me on this one.

Dutrow Jr was right on, but what happened after the race, was very disturbing

I owe an apology to Big Brown trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. I grew very tired of Dutrow last week telling us how good his horse was an how Big Brown was without question going to win the Kentucky Derby. But Dutrow was right on. Big Brown looked every bit the best horse. Horse racing could really use a Triple Crown winner this year, and Big Brown might be the horse to do it.

Unfortunately, horse racing gets another black eye because Eight Belles, the filly, had to be euthanized on the track after the race was over. I don't claim to be an expert on the game, but I have been following closely since 1985, and scenes like the one we saw on Saturday, are a part of the game. Not a part of the game any of us enjoy, but I'm not sure what can be done.

I know this. Don't blame the Owner, Jockey or Trainer. That would be unfair. If you want to blame someone, blame the sport. Maybe these horses are mature enough to handle a race of this magnitude as a three year old. Maybe we need to change the format of the Triple Crown. Run the race later; give these horses more time, to get ready. Put some more distance between the Derby and Preakness. Two weeks is a lot to ask. You can make a case, that the Triple Crown Series is much too grueling. Having said all of that, would it change what happened on Saturday?

Rowe with an outstanding coaching job

Tom Rowe has done an outstanding job the past two seasons as head coach of the River Rats. Rowe will make a great coach in the NHL someday, and he will get that opportunity. But in the meantime, he is expected to return here next season, and try to get the Rats a step closer to winning the Calder Cup.
