Because of the frigid temperatures, a Code Blue alert is in effect. That’s when the temperature falls below 32 degrees.

To stay warm, people have been seeking shelter. One place people go is the Capital City Rescue Mission in Albany. Perry Jones, the executive director, says they usually have 243 people stay during the night, but when there is a Cold Blue, it brings an additional 80 to 100 people.

People seeking shelter can also go to the emergency overflow shelter on State Street, or the IPH Safe Haven on South Swan Street. Jones says he says it’s important that the homeless community has a place to go when it gets cold.

“The additional Code Blue numbers are very important that they are inside. This is bad weather. Especially, if someone is not in their right frame or if they’re struggling in their mind," said Jones.

People looking for shelter can also call the Homeless and Travelers Aid Society Hotline at 518-463-2124.
