Schumer: Premium hikes shows reform is needed
NEW YORK (AP) - Senator Chuck Schumer says the big rise in health insurance premiums in recent years is one reason the country needs health care reform.
The Democrat says premiums in New York have gone up 81 percent since 2000.
He favors the creation of a government-sponsored, nonprofit health insurance plan that would compete with insurance companies for customers.
Critics say the government would do no better running an insurance company than the private sector.
