Official: AG investigates hiring of Espada son

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - An official in the New York attorney general's office says prosecutors are investigating the hiring of a powerful senator's son to a newly created $120,000 job in the chamber and whether that violates state law against nepotism.

The official wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the investigation by Andrew Cuomo's office and asked to remain anonymous.

The official says they've been looking into last week's hiring since it was disclosed in press reports. Former Assemblyman Pedro G. Espada is now Senate liaison between governments.

Bronx Democratic Sen. Pedro Espada says he simply encouraged his son to pursue the post.

Senate Democratic Conference leader Sen. John Sampson spokeswoman Selvena Brooks says the younger Espada's hiring was based on merit.
