What to do when the kids get sick

Governor Paterson recently held a news conference to talk about what schools should do to insure the health of students during the upcoming flu season with an eye on swine flu.

A mom in the audience asked the Governor what to do when her job allows only a few sick days - how is she supposed to keep her child home for as many days as recommended when she might be docked pay or even lose her job. The Governor acknowledged, it's a good question - but had no hard answers for her.

A viewer emailed and asked about the Family Medical Leave Act.

It's a little foggy on the notion of caring for a child with flu. It does say it's applicable "to care for an immediate family member (spouse, child, or parent) with a serious health condition " .. but that begs the question, what's considered serious.

It's an issue we discussed in our morning meeting .. it's something we'll be asking questions about. As they say, stay tuned - we'll try to get you an answer. Until then, if you want more info on the FMLA check out http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/fmla/
