New system tracks sex offenders in Albany

ALBANY - The city of Albany unveiled a new community notification system Thursday called OffenderWatch. The program allows residents to track sex offenders.

Users can sign up on a website to have the police department send them an e-mail message immediately when a sex offender moves in to their neighborhood.

"The most important thing is that it allows parents to be proactive in registering their address and subsequently receiving e-mail notifications if offenders move into their neighborhoods," explained Detective Lt. Kevin Connolly.

Mayor Jerry Jennings and police officials announced the new software upgrades, which are possible through a $10,000 grant.

"It is exciting for us here in the capital of the State of New York and we're the first municipality to unveil this in Albany County," Jennings said.

For Level 3 offenders who are classified as the most likely to re-offend, you can get their actual addresses. For Level 2 offenders, you can see their zip codes.

The website will also send notifications to schools and day care centers if sex offenders locate close by.
