Seven injured in four car accident in Ghent

GHENT -- While three cars were stopped on Route 66, one waiting to make a turn, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office says Adam Moon, 19, failed to stop as he approached.

The result of a four-car crash was that seven people were injured and taken to hospitals Saturday afternoon, deputies said.

The Sheriff's office said Herbert Carr, 55, of Columbiaville, driving a 1969 Chevrolet pickup truck was waiting for traffic to clear in the oncoming lane before making his left hand turn. Behind him were Peggy Alt, 56, of Philmont in a 1992 Buick Road Master. Behind her was Alicia Mitchell, 34, of Hudson in a 2004 Nissan Maxima. All three were stopped in the southbound lane near the Brook Cove Marina.

Moon was driving a 1999 Chevrolet flatbed tow truck and allegedly failed to stop, crashing into Mitchell, who hit Alt, who hit Carr. It happend at 3:48pm Saturday.

Those three were injured along with Agnes Brown, 65, and Francis Heath, 66, both from Catskill and passengers in Carr's truck. Brown and Heath were airlifted to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries.

Mitchell was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital. Her passenger, Gloria Ford, 69, of Catskill, was taken to Albany Med. Alt, Carr and his passenger, Vernea Dennis, 39, of Hudson, were all taken to Columbia Memorial, authorities said.

Ghent and Chatham Fire Companies, Chatham, Greenport and Valatie Rescue squads were all on the scene.
