In a vote Tuesday, the City Council unanimously confirmed Charlie Beck to replace William Bratton, who quit last month to take a job with a security consultancy firm in New York. Beck, a 32-year LAPD veteran, has garnered considerable support from officials and community leaders. His confirmation was expected. Beck says he wants to make the reforms introduced by Bratton a lasting part of the department. Bratton oversaw dropping crime rates and improved relations with communities long suspicious of the department. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
