Police to check on sex offenders at Halloween

SCHENECTADY -- While most are making final preparations for the right costume or candy to hand out for Halloween, police are making their own plans to pay a visit to sex offenders.

"It entails going to the residence, making face to face contact," said Sgt. Luciano Savoia of the Schenectady Police Dept. He expects to knock on 80 doors on Saturday. That's the same number of Level-3 sex offenders living in the city. Police want to make sure they're abiding by the rule to stay inside their homes and not participate in Halloween.

"They have a curfew from 3pm-6am and they're not allowed to answer the door, trick or treat, wear costumes or masks," he said.

The curfew check is only for Level-3 sex offenders. They're the ones most likely to re-offend, police say. But parents are warned to take time to look up the addresses for all the sex offenders in the neighborhood, including levels one and two.

"Be cautious, be suspicious, if you see somebody around you don't know, don't allow your kids to trick or treat there," Sgt. Savoia said.

New York State has a sex offender registry. It's linked to our website, WNYT.com.

Other safety tips include: always go trick-or-treating in large groups, wear bright, reflective clothing, don't go to houses where the lights are off and stay in areas that you know.

Finally, check your child's candy before it's eaten -- by you or them.
