So Primary Day often determines the winner of the November election. Jerry Jennings won a fifth term as mayor. He defeated City Councilman Corey Ellis in the primary. On Election Day he beat out both Ellis, who was running on the Working Families Party line, and Republican Nathan Lebron. Back in September Carolyn McLaughlin defeated Lenny Ricchutti in the Democratic primary for Common Council president. One Tuesday they faced off again, with Ricchuti on the Conservative Party line, but the outcome was the same. For the first time in a long time Betty Barnette was not the Democratic candidate for city treasurer on election night. She was defeated by Kathy Sheehan in the September primary in part because of a scandal over parking tickets. Tuesday Sheehan defeated Barnette, who was running on the Conservative Party line, and Republican Mary Ann McGinn.
