Breslin seeks to expose legal defense contributors

ALBANY - Without actually mentioning the name "Hiram Monserrate," state Sen. Neil Breslin is taking a shot at the recently convicted senator.

Monserrate was convicted of misdemeanor assault after a domestic incident with his girlfriend.

Reports indicate Monserrate paid for his lawyers with a legal defense fund.

By law the people who donate to that fund remain anonymous.

Breslin is introducing a bill that would change that.

"It's like putting your finger in the dike. And I don't expect this to be the last piece of legislation dealing with openness and reform, but I hope it takes a giant step forward," Breslin said.

The bill would be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2009.
