USS Slater ceremony honors volunteers

ALBANY -- Capital Region Veterans were honored Saturday morning at the USS Slater.

The ceremony on the World War II era Destroyer Escort honored the service and sacrifice of all those who served, and are serving, in the Armed Forces. The ship is now a floating museum in Albany. Public tours are offered Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 till 4 until November 29. It will be closed Thanksgiving Day.

Two members of the Slater's crew of volunteers were also recognized for their outstanding service.

"So many people, especially youngsters today, haven't a clue as to what happened in World War II," said Jack Madden, a WWII Veteran who volunteers as a tour guide. "And it should be noted, if we didn't win that war, that would have been a horrible situation."

In addition, there was a small military vehicle display next to the USS Slater. It was presented by the Hudson Mohawk Military Vehicle Collectors Club.

After Thanksgiving Weekend, the ship will close for the winter and reopen in April 2010. It is located on the Hudson River in Downtown Albany just south of the Dunn Memorial Bridge. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children. For more information, call 518-431-1943.
