Could Bill Gates Teach in New York Schools?

There is a controversial question being asked again. It is whether or not teachers in New York should have a Master's Degree for certification in order to teach in New York schools. It is a question that has come up before.

 When I reported on the story when it first came up, one of those against the requirement said it would mean people with a wealth of knowledge, experience and success would not be able to become teachers and  pass on that knowledge to students. He cited Bill Gates as an example.

Others argue having a wealth of knowledge or success is not a prerequisite for what makes a good teacher. Right now New York has a new Education Commissioner who favors teacher preparation and says its the foundation for a student finding success in school. 

It is a question we are going to have to find an answer to-schools need help and many baby boomers who may lack the education requirement but have a wealth of knowledge- will be retiring soon from many diverse business backgrounds. If they turn to schools as a place to invest their new found freedom should they be barred from coming into the classroom?   Just something to think about.
