Surge protectors that have already caused more than $1 million in property damage because they can overheat and start a fire are among this week’s recalled consumer products. Other products include circular saws with a faulty mechanism.
Here’s a more detailed look:
DETAILS: APC 7 and 8 series SurgeArrest surge protectors made before 2003. The model and serial numbers are located on a label on the bottom of the surge protector. The two numbers that follow the first letter or letters in the serial number sequence indicate the year of manufacture. The unit is included in the recall if the numbers are 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 00, 01 or 02. APC and the words Personal, Professional, Performance or Network are printed on the surge protectors. They were sold from January 1993 through December 2002. Model numbers can be found at http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2014/Schneider-Electric-Recalls-APC-Surge-Protectors/
WHY: The surge protectors can overheat, posing a fire hazard.
INCIDENTS: 700 reports of the surge protectors overheating and melting and 55 claims of property damage from smoke and fire, including $916,000 in fire damage to a home and $750,000 in fire damage to a medical facility. There are 13 reports of injuries, including smoke inhalation and contact burns from touching the overheated surge protectors.
HOW MANY: About 15 million.
DETAILS: TS 55 REQ Plunge Cut Circular Saw for woodcutting with a 160 mm saw blade. It has aluminum guide rails and a plunge cut feature. The date code and serial number are found on a rating plate on the saw’s motor housing under the main handle. Recalled saws include date codes ranging from 02/13 to 05/13 and serial numbers 40033594 through 40074108. They were sold from May to July in 2013.
WHY: The plunge lock can engage when not intended, causing the saw blade to remain exposed from the housing following completion of the plunge cut and posing a laceration hazard.
INCIDENTS: None reported.
HOW MANY: About 5,200 in the U.S. and 500 in Canada.
