SCHUYLERVILLE - Neighbors told police that they heard arguing inside the apartment at 82 Church Street, then a single gun shot.

Matthew Furlani was dead inside the apartment. His best friend, Troy Cassell, says he was the first inside after the shooting.

"And I haven't been able to get the picture out of my head since," Cassell said Monday afternoon.

Police have charged 28-year-old Joey M. Paul, a one-time girlfriend of Furlani's, with his murder.

Friends say Paul used Furlani's AK-47 assault rifle to shoot and kill him.

Saratoga County District Attorney Jim Murphy isn't talking about the alleged motive, but says Paul has a history of drug abuse and crime. She's charged with intentional murder.

"We have no self defense, no indication of self defense. We have no injuries at all sustained by her," said Murphy, who was traveling to Essex County Monday where he was serving as a special prosecutor.

Matt Furlani was also 28-years old. He worked at his father's popular local diner, which was closed Monday.

Furlani's friends say he was just helping out his troubled former girlfriend and didn't deserve to die. Especially this way.

"You know just being a good guy. Even though it was an ex-girlfriend, he was just trying to be a good guy. He got repay in the wrong way," said Cassell. "She's heartless. Always has been. From day one, when he met her, I knew she was trouble. It's not fair at all."

Joey Paul is being held in the Saratoga County jail without bail.
