ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York's brutal fight for control of the state Senate is under way.

Republicans hope to protect their 32-30 majority, in part by using the new election district lines they drew. They face Democrats who hope to ride a wave of support for President Obama into the majority.

Control of the chamber promises to be New York's tightest and most important election fight this fall.

Professor Doug Muzzio of Baruch College says it will be "a death match."

Much is at stake for New Yorkers. Republicans promise a far greater voice for upstate and suburban voters and their economic priorities. Democrats promise a progressive agenda that they say will again make New York a national leader.
