Man drowns at Lock Nine

GLENVILLE--What New York State Police originally thought was a traffic stop likely ended with the driver's body being pulled from the Mohawk River.
A Trooper based in Princetown reports an attempt to pull over a male driver on Route 5 in Glenville Thursday night but then, the Trooper says, the driver took off in his vehicle. He was allegedly speeding and alcohol use was suspected.
"There is (sic) a host of reasons why someone would flee and resist and only they can account for that. Coupled with what revealed in our investigation there were legal concerns," explains Captain Steven James of the NYSP Bureau of Criminal Investigations.
Investigators claim they pursued the driver for about four miles before he stopped near the Lock 9 bridge, got out of the car, ran towards the Mohawk River and jumped in.
Police report that they asked the driver to swim back, because it looked like he was becoming fatigued but then they lost sight of him.
Divers went in last night and the search resumed this morning. At about 10:30a, a male body was recovered near Lock 9 and Troopers believe it to be the person they pulled over last night.
"He was probably 100 feet out, fatigued and had a change of heart and chose to turn around but was unable to return to shore," adds Captain James.
James says it's unclear if the driver had a valid license. The car involved was a relative's, but not stolen.
