TROY - Police remained at the scene early Saturday afternoon on the Fourth Street bridge in South Troy, and what appeared to be evidence markers were scattered in the spots where police say a man was badly beaten.

Troy Police Chief John Cooney told us, “We believe there was some type of weapon involved, not a fire arm, based on blunt trauma to the head.”

Police believe it was a blunt instrument, a baseball bat or metal pipe. Police received the call around 1 am from the medical staff at Albany Medical Center that the victim was brought in by a group of people, and that the injuries they saw were most likely life threatening.

The investigation so far, has led police to an initial argument and a minor assault on the 4th Street bridge. That victim then went home and came right back with a group and went on the attack with the blunt object. Based on possible immigration status of those involved and the language barrier, police say this case could take a little time to piece together.

Cooney said, “In attempting to ascertain identification, we've come to realize that we are most likely dealing with undocumented aliens from the country of Mexico.”

Neighbors say they know the group and they seemed like nice people. Kurt Mason, who recently moved near the bridge, says he's not surprised.

Kurt said Saturday, “When we first moved in, there were a couple of shootings within the first months. Now we have this. It’s not the nicest neighborhood.”

Police say neighbors should not fear for their safety, because the beating was an isolated incident; a fight that started and ended badly among a close knit group.
