TROY - Troy Police Chief John Tedesco says the recent string of arsons in that city has convinced him that the department's controversial Street Crimes Unit should be reinstated to get tougher with the bad guys.

The chief told NewsChannel13 that the unit, which was disbanded two years ago following claims of "police brutality," should be reconstituted, but only if the Police Union would ease the rules about who gets appointed to the task force.

Bob Fitzgerald President of the Police Union who appointed Tedesco as Police Chief already has done battle with the chief over seniority rights

That is despite another council member Mark Mcgrath who is also calling for reinstatement of the Street Crimes Unit

The chief is saying that Fitzgerald, the Union President is one of three democrats trying to get him fired.

Chief Tedesco says they are making some progress, but no arrests so far in the arsons. Efforts to reach the PBA president for comment were unsuccessful.
