TROY - Building number four of the Taylor Apartments in Troy rises nine stories high. On Sunday night residents there were on high alert after a man's body was found in the building's stairwell early Sunday afternoon. Police say the man was shot to death.
Late Sunday night, police were still withholding the victim's name, awaiting family notification.
One of the troubling details of the city's seventh murder of 2012 is that four young children discovered the body while scampering down the stairs, on their way to play outside. One of the children was a 5-year old girl.
The grandmother of that girl tells News Channel 13 that she doesn't think the child is old enough to understand what she saw.
The mother of a ten year old boy who saw the body says her son is already having flashbacks, and she knows she'll have to keep an eye on him.
Another woman who says she's a home health aide, said she got to the body, where it was sprawled across the landing on the second floor of the stairwell, tried to find a pulse, but couldn't, and saw blood splattered on the wall, and a bloody wound on the side of the man's head.
Police say the man did not live in the building, they didn't know how he got in, or what he was going there.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday at Albany Medical Center.
