St. Regis Mohawk Tribe receives $596,000 to fight domestic violence.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe in northern New York is getting $596,000 from the federal government to fight domestic violence.
U.S. Attorney Richard Hartunian says the money is in a grant from the justice department's Office on Violence Against Women for a program called Violence Against Women Tribal Government Training.
Hartunian says the funding is important because Native American women are more than twice as likely as women of other races to be victimized. He says they suffer the highest rates of violence, stalking, rape and sexual assault.
Federal prosecutors are cooperating with tribal authorities to reduce violence on the reservation on the St. Lawrence River near Massena.
