Final campaigning in newly-drawn 19th Congressional District

ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL - Kingston lawyer Julian Schreibman began running for the seat in Congress even before the state legislature had agreed to and released the new district lines.
"I've been out in every community talking to small business owners, farmers, and students and citizens to make sure that they're hearing the message of standing up for the Middle Class," Schreibman said Monday.
Chris Gibson already represented voters in about 50 per cent of the new district from his win two years ago, but picked up many constituents from retiring Congressman Maurice Hinchey's district.
"Well, I have a proven record of bringing people together to get things done," Gibson said. "You look after the aftermath of the storm, I worked with my Democratic colleague Peter Welch from Vermont."
Each candidate worked hard Monday to try to communicate what they would do if elected.
Each had to overcome strong negative images placed by heavy opponent television advertising.
"We also need to make sure people know the truth about the Congressman's voting record and that's what I've been telling," Schreibman said. "Unfortunately, some on the other side want to etch-a-sketch away his history and say that I'm distorting it but we're absolutely telling the truth about his record and we'll keep doing it."
Gibson said "I think he's run a very nasty and deceptive campaign and the most recent ad that he has up that says I'm denying women an abortion in the case of rape and incest. This is flatly untrue and you know, I'm very disappointed with that."
