Malone: Not bitter, but surprised he and Kavanagh got beat

Supreme Court Justice Bernard "Bud" Malone, one of the most respected judges in the area, got defeated in Tuesday’s election.
Malone and another Supreme Court Justice Michael Kavanagh of Ulster County are both 14 year veterans of the Supreme Court.
Despite that, and despite the respect for both Republican judges, they lost to two Democratic newcomers, Richard Mott of Kinderhook
Malone says he’s not bitter, but surprised that he and Kavanagh got beat, and got beat so badly
A decorated war veteran former assistant U.S. Attorney, and a member of the Supreme Court's Elite Appellate Division for the past 7 years, Malone, who lives in Delmar was a Republican running in a seven county district that stretches all the way from Rensselaer County to the Pennsylvania border.
This district has 60,000 more Democrats than Republicans.

Malone and Kavanagh both got rated as “highly qualified” by the Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission, the highest such rating
Both of their opponents got a rating on the step lower.
Malone says the legislature might consider a system where the state's three hundred supreme court justices are appointed, not elected...not unlike the Court of Appeals
