HALFMOON -- Parents looked on as their kids play soccer at Sportsplex of Halfmoon Tuesday night. Many of them were shocked to learn for the first time that one of the kids, who also play at the facility, had been allegedly approached by an adult in a sexual manner.
"I think it's awful. I'm glad I know now. I will tell other parents," said Kim Pino whose daughter plays soccer at Sportsplex.
State Police arrested Scott Phillips, 51, of Glenville ten days ago. They say he peeked through the door jam of an enclosed bathroom stall that was occupied by a 12 year-old boy at the sports complex. Police say Phillips then unlocked the stall door, went in the stall with the boy and closed the door behind him.
"At that point the boy stood up and he asked the boy if he could see his penis," said State Police Investigator Kevin Noto.
Police said the boy said no and left the stall without incident. He told his parents who contacted the State Police. Investigators were able to track down the suspect and charged him with endangering the welfare of a child.
"There ware some measures that were taken at the sports complex that assisted us in identifying who the party was." Investigator Noto said. "We used the information that we got to locate the person."
Sources said Phillips was also a parent at Sportsplex. His child plays soccer and that's why he was at the facility. Police said he did not know the victim. Some parents said incidents like this make them feel they can't let their guard down.
"Keep an eye on them. Make them aware that the situation occurred, that if there's ever an issue they need to the appropriate people, me," said soccer dad Dan Loucks.
"I think you have to teach your child to have good head and they got to use it. That's the way the world goes round. Sad to say," Pino said.
