BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A nursing student has helped save the life of a resident at an assisted living facility in Bennington, Vt.

Second-year student Eva Friend had just arrived at Washington Elms on Nov. 26 when a registered nurse yelled for her to quickly come to the back porch. Jerry BeShane was found slumped over in a chair.

The Bennington Banner reports Friend found he didn't have a pulse. She did CPR on him. BeShane was resuscitated at least once, but then crashed again. Friend continued her compressions.  Friend is certified in CPR although had not previously performed it on someone.

A rescue squad arrived after several minutes and took him to the hospital. BeShane eventually returned to the facility.

Friend was honored for her efforts and thanked by BeShane.
