UAlbany Blasts Binghamton 71-59

VESTAL, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Sam Rowley recorded his first career double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead UAlbany over Binghamton, 71-59, on Monday, Jan. 7 at the Events Center. The Great Danes’ Australians Rowley, Peter Hooley, and Luke Devlin combined for 43 of the teams 71 total points.
“For us (UAlbany) to come in and have our leading scorers (Jacob Iati and Mike Black) shoot 3-22 and win by double-digits, I think that says a lot about our supporting cast,” said Coach Brown on the team win. “Our guys were focused on executing tonight’s game plan and they did an overall good job with it.”
UAlbany (13-4, 2-1 America East) improves to 2-1 in conference play with Rowley recording career-highs in both points (21) and rebounds (13). The Great Danes had three other players in double-figures with John Puk scoring 13, Luke Devlin with 12, and Hooley with 10. As a unit, the team outrebounded the Bearcats, 41-36.
The Great Danes held an 11-point lead at the half, 32-21. The Great Danes had seven different scorers at the half, with Rowley leading the team with 11 points and nine rebounds. For the half, UAlbany shot 48.1 percent (13-27) from the field and dominated in the paint, recording an 18-2 advantage over Binghamton.
It was more of the same in the second, as UAlbany extended its lead to as high as 18, 44-26,with 14:41 left in the second half. Puk led the 12-5 run with five of his game-total 13 points.
Binghamton (2-13, 0-2 America East) looked to get back into the contest, cutting the deficit to 11, 60-49, with 4:27 left. The Bearcats’ Javon Ralling scored all four of his points to cut the game within 11.
However, UAlbany withstood the Binghamton run and finished the game with a 12-point win, 71-59. Eight Great Dane players contributed at least two points in the game and three players had at least four assists (Hooley, Rowley, and Mike Black).
The Great Danes look to carry its success against Maine on Saturday, Jan. 12 at SEFCU Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
