FEMA seeks feedback on canal project

Rotterdam Junction - The Federal Government asked for feedback on a proposal to rebuild eight local canal dams, but there's only two days left to comment.
FEMA published a legal notice in mid December, saying it is assisting the state to prevent the kind of flooding we had in Tropical Storms Irene and Lee, but the window for public comment was 15 days and ends this Thursday.
The area slated for work runs from Lock 15 in Fort Plain to Lock 8 in Scotia.
FEMA said it plans to replace the current gates with moveable dams at each lock, which could be removed much more quickly during flooding events, allowing debris to flow through.
During Irene and Lee, uprooted trees and debris clogged in the gates, causing widespread flooding and devastation to businesses and neighborhoods.
FEMA plans to spend $102,000,000 to assist the Canal Corporation in alleviating the problem.
