ALBANY - The governor is defending his call for the toughest assault weapons ban in the nation.
During his news conference Thursday, the governor says there is no doubt the gun issue is controversial, but he believes something has to be done.
"I am sure you will have extremists who say my policies don't go far enough because I allow people to have guns and I'm sure there are extremists on the other side the Republicans are worries about which will argue the government has no right to do this."
The governor wants to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines.
He also wants background checks for those who buy guns privately and increased measures to make sure the mentally ill can't get a gun.
