HVCC victim to layoffs

TROY--NewsChannel 13 has learned that nearly 30 employees at Hudson Valley Community College are losing their jobs or having their work schedule cut back.
All the affected positions are non-faculty, which means they could be in the business or accounting office, clerical or even academic advisors.
Eighteen positions have been cut entirely. And ten others will have their hours reduced. The 28 jobs in question make up about 5% of the non-faculty staffing.
The layoffs are a result of decreased enrollment and stagnant state and local funding. HVCC administrators are also making cuts to travel and equipment in every department.
The goal is to save money without impeding on student satisfaction.
At the beginning of the national recession, in 2008/09, HVCC experienced an increased enrollment as people re-trained for new careers. But, according the HVCC President Drew Matonak, now potential students are delaying higher ed or avoiding it entirely because of their financial situations.
