UAlbany Starts Cold, Late Vermont 3 Sinks Danes

ALBANY, N.Y.- Down seven at the half, the University at Albany looked to rally in the second half but fell short to Vermont, 50-43, on Saturday, Jan. 26 at SEFCU Arena. The Great Danes look to bounce back against Stony Brook on Tuesday, Jan. 29 on ESPN3 at SEFCU Arena.
Senior guard Mike Black paced UAlbany (16-6, 5-3 America East) with 13 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the charity stripe. Junior center John Puk and redshirt-freshman guard Peter Hooley each had double-digit scoring performances with 10 and 12 points, respectively. Despite shooting 18.7 percent (5-27) in the first half, the Great Danes refocused in the second half and shot 40.7 percent (11-27).
Vermont’s (13-7, 6-2 America East) Clancy Rugg led his squad with a double-double performance of 14 points and 10 rebounds for the game. As a team, the Catamounts shot 48.7 percent (19-39) and led in rebounds, 33-30.
With a seven-point deficit, 22-15, going into the second half, UAlbany looked to regain its composure. The Great Danes opened up with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to two, 24-22, with 16:07 to play. Puk capped the run with a crowd-roaring dunk.
Vermont responded back with a 9-0 run, 33-22, with 11:35 remaining to silence the crowd. The Catamounts used two under-the-basket plays to Clancy Rugg to spark the run.
The Great Danes flipped the switch and grabbed their first lead of the game, 39-38, with 4:10 remaining in the contest. UAlbany used a 17-5 run with Black leading the charge, hitting six consecutive points in 25 seconds.
However, Vermont held UAlbany to just four points in the final four minutes and shot 7-of-8 from the free-throw line to ice the game.
