LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) - It's a big month for winter festivals across the North Country, with scores of events set through February in the Adirondacks.

The annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival kicked off for the 116th time on Friday and runs through next Sunday, with the ice palace and closing parade just two of the attractions.

The Lake George Winter Carnival opens this weekend and spans each weekend in February, with outhouse races, motorcycle and ATV races and restaurant cook-offs among the highlights.

Other locations hosting winter carnivals and festivals this month include the Carthage area outside Watertown, Ogdensburg on the St. Lawrence River, Raquette Lake and Inlet, both in Hamilton County.
