SCHENECTADY - Police have arrested 43-year-old Gloria Nelligan for the death of her 8-year-old grandson.

Shah'iim Nelligan was found dead at her home Saturday morning.

Schenectady police ruled Shah'iim's death a homicide after receiving results of an autopsy. They have not said what the cause of death was.

"There was a dispute that took place directly prior to his being found in an unresponsive state. that directly led to his death," Lt. Mark McCracken said.

Police say the dispute leading to Shah'iim's death was a physical altercation, adding there were others in the house when it happened.

"There were three other juveniles there at the time," McCracken said.

Police declined to say who those juveniles were, but neighbors say Ms. Nelligan lived with three of her daughters, in addition to Shah'iim.

They also say the 8-year-old suffered from mental disabilities, a fact police also declined to confirm.

Candles had been placed Sunday night outside 23 Mynderse as friends remembered the little boy whose life was cut tragically short

Nelligan faces a first-degree manslaughter charge. She's expected to be formally charged Monday.
