When is too much, too much

I've been thinking about this for a while when it comes to self disclosure. And then Kristi Barlette @JustKristi raised the same issue recently on FB.

Posting to FB and Twitter and even blogging seems to require a certain amount of talking about oneself. Not something I'm generally comfortable doing. I'm a reporter - that means I get YOU to talk about your life. I'm the conduit.

But then I got thinking - and Kristi referenced it - perhaps by opening up I can encourage others to take certain actions in their lives. So when I go for a mammogram or have my skin checked because I've already had a skin cancer, I can lead by example.

Okay . .that works for me.

But is that enough?

Do I have to talk about how I feel about these experiences? It comes back to how much stuff do we really want to know about each other and just because we have so many places to share - blogs, twitter, fb - do we have to. It's sort of like a buffet - just because there's a lot of food doesn't mean we have to gorge.

Perhaps that's really my point as I chew through this. A little sharing is good. It connects us all, it can serve as an example, a catalyst. Too much, well, it's just too much.

Your thoughts are welcome.
