NEW YORK (AP) - New York Sen. Charles Schumer is calling on the Transportation Security Administration to reverse its newly announced policy to allow passengers to carry small knives onto planes.

The New York Democrat says Sunday the TSA's plan to allow knives and other items like novelty-size baseball bats, billiard cues and hockey sticks puts passengers and flight crews in danger. Schumer says these items could be used as weapons. They have been prohibited since Sept. 11.

The new policy will be implemented April 25.

TSA officials have said gun-carrying pilots, air marshals and crew members trained in self-defense provide security against the misuse of these items.

Schumer joins the head of Delta Air Lines, aviation insurers and unions that represents flight attendants, airline pilots and federal air marshals in opposing the plan.
