1 person hurt in Colonie apartment fire

COLONIE - Firefighters in Colonie are trying to find the cause of an early morning fire that left one woman with serious burns and sent six people out in the cold.

The fire broke out around midnight in an apartment building at 900 South Family Drive.  Police say it may have started in a kitchen area.

Thirty-nine-year-old Deborah Stearns and a man with her were the ones who reported the fire.  Police say Stearns suffered burns over 25 percent of her body.  She was taken to Albany Medical Center and then transferred to a hospital in Syracuse where she is listed in serious condition.

The building is an old farmhouse made into apartments.  It suffered extensive damage.  The American Red Cross is helping those left homeless.

The cause is still under investigation, but police say it does not appear suspicious.
