TROY - A routine medical call turned into a potentially life threatening situation for a paramedic in Troy tonight.

Police say that paramedic was stabbed with a hypodermic needle while trying to help a man who apparently overdosed on drugs. Police aren't releasing the paramedics name.

They have arrested 32-year-old Joel Burgess of Mechanicville. Police say Burgess lashed out at and stabbed the EMT who was trying to help him outside a Hannaford Supermarket.

Both were taken to Samaritan Hospital for treatment, but that's when police say Burgess ran from cops.

They eventually caught him and he's been taken back into custody.
