GREENWICH - A 40-year-old man is in critical condition after being shocked by a high-voltage line at a hydroelectric power plant.

Washington County Undersheriff John Winchell says John Hughes of Greenwich was trespassing at the power plant Sunday evening and was walking on a beam inside when he touched a 34,500-volt line. Winchell said Hughes and another person apparently cut through a fence to get to the plant along the Batten Kill.

Winchell said it's not clear why Hughes was in the substation. He said some electrical substations have been targeted by thieves looking for metal to sell, but that one hadn't been the site of prior break-ins.

Hughes has been taken to the Westchester Medical Center burn unit.
