A Schenectady man is facing possession charges after police say he accidentally shot himself in the groin Friday night.

Police say 21-year-old Joseph Hewitt was at the Imperial Motel on State Street when the revolver he was carrying in his waistband went off. Hewitt was treated by members of the Schenectady Fire Department and taken to Albany Med.

Hewitt is charged with three counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Police say the handgun was reported stolen out of North Carolina and that Hewitt wasn't even legally allowed to own a firearm due to a previous criminal conviction.
