Emma Willard offers scholarships to local girls

TROY -- Emma Willard, the prestigious boarding school located in Troy, is offering a new scholarship program for up to ten girls. They will have the opportunity to go to the school tuition free and these scholarships may extend through college as well. The deadline for applications is February first.

Emma Willard is looking for girls with exceptional promise, who might otherwise not have the chance to go there.

"Everyone is so smart. I can remember, coming in especially, I was so worried about, oh my goodness, everybody's probably so smart, it's a boarding school. What if I can't handle it?" said student Natassia Cummings.

But, Nastassia Cummings, now in eleventh grade, has more than handled it.  She is thriving at Emma Willard. She has an avid interest in English, law, French, dance, and just about everything else. She is at Emma Willard on a Holloway scholarship.

"I am so grateful because I know that being an inner city kid that if I would have stayed at home, I probably wouldn't have as many opportunities as I have had since I've been here," said Cummings.

Now a new program of Davis Scholarships will be available to up to ten students each year for young women grades ten and up. Emma Willard will cover the gap so that students can attend tuition free. The girls have to be excellent students in their schools now. The scholarships are meant for those from a disadvantaged or diverse background.

"Somebody who is eager to be involved in providing an education for herself because she will have to work. It's a demanding and rigorous environment here. But she'd find a lot of partners in that project," said Head of School Trudy Hall.

Davis Scholars can also get tuition help through their college years as well, so that's up to seven years of scholarship funding at some of the best schools in the country.

"This is a program that could open eyes in ways that were heretofore unimagined. And for us to be able to do it is a phenomenal opportunity. And I think for me, what's most exciting is to imagine that we could actually have local students involved because that's something we've wanted to do for a long time," said Hall.

The deadline for applications for next school year, is February 1, 2008.
