Wound care has always been a challenge for diabetics.
Now, researchers at the University of Notre Dame may have made a promising discovery.
They've identified enzymes in the wounds of healthy and diabetic mice - some that are detrimental and others that help wounds to heal.
“In a mouse model of diabetic wound healing we found two of these enzymes so one was MMP8 and one was MMP9 and so we went to then determine what the role of each of these enzymes was and when we administered an inhibitor that is selective for MMP8 it actually decreased the wound healing so it slowed it down,” says Dr. Mayland Chang of the University of Notre Dame.
When they administered the selective inhibitor for MMP9 the wounds healed more quickly.
Dr. Chang says they are now seeking approval to study human tissue samples to see if they get similar results.
They are hopeful this can lead to a major breakthrough for diabetics struggling with chronic wounds.
