BALLSTON SPA – Joey Paul wasn't wearing a coat as she was led inside the courthouse. Perhaps a hint that things were about to get heated.

Paul used an AK-47 to shoot and kill her boyfriend, Matt Furlani, inside his Schuylerville apartment in July of 2012.

She pled guilty to manslaughter in the first degree in November. At Paul's sentencing Tuesday afternoon, Matthew Furlani's mother, Christina Harwood Downey, gave an emotional victim impact statement, saying softly, "I hope every time you close your eyes, all you see is the grotesque way that you last saw my son... We all hope you rot in jail."

Paul shouted back a stream of obscenities and, "Shame on you for the mother you were. Who are you to judge me?"

Her comments incited an angry, profanity-laced outburst between Paul and Furlani's family. Paul was forcibly removed from the courtroom to cool off. When she returned after about 10 minutes, the judge sentenced her to 18 and a half years in prison.

"She deserves life. He was a wonderful man. He got with a very evil person who never deserves to see light, ever again," said Ashley, who identified herself as Furlani's sister, but didn't provide her last name.

Saratoga County District Attorney Jim Murphy says the 18 and a half year sentence and five years of post release supervision is appropriate given the court's finding that Paul acted under "extreme emotional disturbance."

"In the end she goes to prison for 18 and a half years and the family of Mr. Furlani goes home and starts the grieving process, from today forward."

As the 30-year-old Paul was taken away in handcuffs, she failed to admit any wrongdoing.

"I would say I love him, I miss him."

NewsChannel 13 asked Paul if she is sorry for what she did.

"What I did was an accident," Paul said.

She will serve her sentence at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison in Westchester County.
