HAMMONDSPORT, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a weather gauge on the shores of one of the Finger Lakes has recorded a wind chill of minus-61.
Officials with the Steuben County Office of Emergency Services tell the Star-Gazette of Elmira that the reading was made at 5 a.m. Tuesday near a beach in Hammondsport, on the southern end of Keuka Lake, 55 miles southeast of Rochester.
The officials say the temperature at the time was minus-18, with wind gusts of 55 mph.
The National Weather Service questioned the county agency's reading, saying Wednesday it was "very unlikely" the measurement was accurate. The weather service says the lowest wind chill it recorded near Keuka Lake Tuesday morning was minus-35 in Prattsburg, a few miles north of Hammondsport.
