New York Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy announced on Wednesday she will not seek re-election in November.
The Long Island Democrat says she looks forward to resuming her role as a citizen activist.
McCarthy became an advocate for gun control in 1993 after her husband was shot and killed on the Long Island Railroad.
The congresswoman turned 70 on Sunday and announced last year that she was dealing with lung cancer.
