Junior netminder Scott Diebold made 26 saves, including 10 on the penalty kill, but the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team fell to 15th-ranked Clarkson University, 3-0, this evening at Cheel Arena. With the win, the Golden Knights improve to 16-9-2 overall (9-4-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 10-11-4 (4-6-3 ECAC Hockey).
Senior Allan McPherson (Kinburn, ON/Kanata Stallions) netted Clarkson’s lone power-play tally of the night, at 7:33 of the first period, to open the scoring. Picking up the rebound of a shot by classmate Will Frederick (Allison Park, PA/Jersey Hitmen), he flipped the puck past a sprawling Diebold (Buffalo, NY/Tri-City Storm) for his team-leading ninth of the season.
Clarkson made it 2-0 at 2:48 of the second stanza, when sophomore Todd Christian (Norwalk, CT/Notre Dame Hounds) beat Diebold five-hole, after an offensive zone draw was won directly to him by classmate Christian Powers (Carlisle, ON/Stouffville Spirit).
The hosts tacked on an insurance goal at 15:45 of the second on a delayed penalty. Sophomore defenseman Kevin Tansey (Hammond, ON/Cumberland Grads) took a feed from senior Jarrett Burton (Echo Bay, ON/Kingston Voyageurs) and stuck home his third of the year, from between the dots.
Rensselaer had its best chances to score in the second, but couldn’t beat Clarkson freshman goaltender Steve Perry (Ligonier, PA/Fairbanks Ice Dogs), who stopped all 16 shots he faced. Diebold made 14 of his 26 stops in the second period alone.
The Engineers are back on the ice tomorrow night, when they visit St. Lawrence (7pm). Clarkson hosts fourth-ranked Union (7pm).
