STILLWATER - Three people were in custody Friday night, charged with running a huge heroin operation out of their Saratoga County mobile home park, and for one of the suspects it's been an especially busy week in police custody.

It has not been a good week for Michael Wescott of Stillwater. Within a 48-hour period, he's been arrested in two different local communities and charged with crimes connected to heroin, t-bone steaks, and dog food.

At the Saratoga Hills Mobile Home Park on county route 76, police say they've been keeping a close eye on the activity at 8 Birch Lane for months. On Friday morning, pre-dawn, they moved in, and as a result, the couple living inside was moved out.

Brenda Smith, 59, and her husband Basil Smith, 55, were both charged with running a huge heroin business from inside.

Several neighbors tell News Channel 13 they were awake when Stillwater Police, State Police, and Saratoga County sheriffs deputies stormed the mobile home park Friday morning, describing what they saw as like a real-life television police drama unfolding right before their eyes.

None of the park residents who spoke with our Dan Levy say they were surpised by what happened, in fact, the consensus seemed to be: why'd it take police so long to make the arrests?

In the window of the Smith's trailer was a sign that read: Trespassers will be shot. As if that weren't enough of a red flag pointing to unusual activity, neighbors also say there were constant visitors to the Smith's trailer at all times of the day and night.

Also under surveillance by police was a mobile home just around the bend, at 103 Elm Lane, where 38-year old Michael Wescott lives. He is also facing several drug-related charges -- both felonies and misdemeanors.

Wescott was also arrested on Wednesday morning by East Greenbush Police at the Price Chopper on Columbia Turnpike, charged with shoplifting $400 worth of groceries, including packages of steaks and roasts, and a healthy supply of dog food.

All three suspects were in the Saratoga County Jail Friday night being held without bail.

Police also say their investigation is continuing and additional charges are pending.
