She's the youngest person, male or female, to ever win the slalom race. Now, Mikaela Shiffrin is growing a big following. And, if you've ever skied at Jiminy Peak, you may have taken a run next to the American racer. Her family is from nearby Lanesboro, Massachusetts.
On the slopes, young skiers are inspired after seeing the run that earned Mikaela a gold medal. Some fans, like Kayle Waterhouse, took notes as they watched the Olympian in the slalom race, hoping to take away a few pointers.
“I look at her form,” said Waterhouse. “It's incredible how low she is, how close her skis are and how well she goes through the course.”
Even more amazing to them is Shiffrin skied some of the very same trails as them at Jiminy Peak. The ski resort gave her kudos on its LED display at the entrance of the chair lift.
“A little connection that's super exciting,” said Tyler Fairbank, CEO and President of Jiminy Peak
Shiffrin's family lives in Lanesboro, the next town over from where Jiminy Peak is located. Newschannel 13 was there with the family when they erupted in celebration the moment they knew Shiffrin had won gold.
Their pride and excitement reverberated through the community and at Jiminy Peak where these young women skiing the trails can't stop thinking about Shiffrin's accomplishment.
