Quick thinking by a motorist and a school bus driver saves the life of a man and his 7-month-old son after a fiery crash in Saratoga County on Monday.
According to police, 22-year-old Andrew Trosan was traveling east on County Route 45 in Galway when he crossed over the center line and crashed into a Galway school bus.
There were no students on the bus at the time of the crash, but Trosan's son was in the back seat of his pickup truck. Police say the child was properly restrained in a car seat.
Officals say Trosan's truck caught fire almost immediately, but due to injuries, Trosan was not able to get himself or his son out of the vehicle. Police say another driver, 32-year-old Derek Ricciardi, had been following behind the school bus when the accident occurred. He ran over to the pickup truck and rescued Trosan's son.
Despite his own injuries, 71-year-old bus driver Casimr (Chuck) Dziegiel rescued Trosan by dragging him from the burning truck to safety. Security cameras on the bus captured the rescue.
Dziegiel, Trosan and his son were all taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Police believe Trosan may have fallen asleep at the wheel. He was ticketed for failure to keep right.
