SCHENECTADY – Police are asking Schenectady residents to be on high alert so they don’t fall for a phone scam.

They say someone pretending to be from National Grid is calling homes.

The caller claims someone owes money, and will shut the power off it's not paid.

In some cases, they urge people to buy pre-paid credit cards.

You can always verify your account status by calling the National Grid number on your bill.
