VICTORY MILLS – A young man, described by his neighbors as a quiet high school student and a promising volunteer firefighter, is accused of murder.
Matthew Brown, 18, called 911 at about 11:35 p.m. Friday to report a dispute between his mother and her fiancé, Derik Clark, according to a press release from Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo.
Before deputies reached the house at 66-A Gates Ave., also known as Rt. 32, Brown began arguing with Clark and stabbed him in the neck, Zurlo said. Clark, 32, died of his injuries.
"They always seemed very friendly," neighbor Kristin Thrane said. "I seen them yesterday, and they stopped to talk to me while I was playing with the kids out back… and that was the last time I seen them."
Brown is a student at Schuylerville High School, neighbors said. School administrators and school board members did not return phone calls late Saturday seeking confirmation.
Brown had recently joined the Victory Mills Volunteer Fire Department, Chief Mark Dennison said. Described as a promising young member, Brown was just fitted for a dress uniform on Thursday.
"Good kid," Dennison said. "Quiet. Attended all of our drills. Very active in fundraising. We've never had a problem with him. He came highly recommended. It's just a shock."
Brown is charged with murder in the second-degree, according to the sheriff’s office. He was being held in the Saratoga County Jail on no bail.
The victim, Clark, had children from a previous relationship, neighbors said. He worked as a mechanic, fixing trucks for a local landscaping company, neighbors said.
He and Heather Brown, 34, were engaged for only a few months ago, neighbors said. She was not reachable on Saturday.
Editor's Note: The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office spelled the victim's first name Derik. His name is spelled Derick on social networking. The legal spelling of his name is not clear.
