QUICK LINKS:

It's a quiet thing.

I've spent most of the past decade in school. First it was my Masters in Bioethics, then my Doctorate in Professional Studies / Bioethics .. both from the Alden March Bioethics Institute at Albany Medical Center.

To say it's been a challenge is an understatement. I hold down a full time job - I host/co-produce HEALTH LINK at WMHT - 13 shows a year .. then there's the public speaking, the theater .. and yes, I have a home life. But that challenge taught me to better organize my time. My marathon running taught me to trust that the finish line, despite the fact that it appears to move away as you approach, really is THERE. The school work broadened my world and has helped me make better sense of the changing health care field which I cover.

I'm not really sure what I expected to feel when I completed the work. I surely didn't expect a wave of sadness.  I was a bit weepy. Perhaps it was the leftover emotion, like when I cross a marathon finish line .. perhaps it was bidding farewell to that chapter in my life. Perhaps it stems from the unknown that lies ahead - how WILL I practically apply all this knowledge? Oh, I've been using it for sometime -- but is something more demanded? I'm sure recent college graduates can recognize this.

And then I found myself thinking about the lyrics to a song from a Broadway show - Flora the Red Menace .. A QUIET THING:

When it all come true
Just the way you planned
It's funny but the bells don't ring
It's a quiet thing
When you hold the world
In your trembling hand
You think you'd hear a choir singing
But it's a quiet thing
There are no exploding fire works
Where's the roaring of the crowd
Maybe it's the strange new atmosphere
Way up here among the clouds

Happiness comes in on tiptoe
Well, what do you know
It's a quiet thing
A very quiet thing...

We infuse activities with 'something' .. not something tangible .. but 'something'.. When in fact much of life is a quiet thing.  There are no pronouncements, no overnight changes just the satisfaction in knowing we are capable - we can effect change - we can be open to learning.

I look forward to sharing my learning with all of you --- in a quiet way ... but one that will, I hope, be most rewarding.

Thank you to all who supported me on this journey and to all who will work with me as I go forward ..

And all the other graduates -- VERY HEARTY CONGRATS -- ALL BEST ON YOUR NEXT ACT!!! Don't worry if you don't make a splash -- 'happiness comes in on tiptoe"
